Infrared photography became famous during WW2 when soldiers took photographs through IR cameras to see what was unseen by the naked eye. This way they could sense what the enemy was up to. What is infrared and how does it have an edge over contemporary photography? Let me take you to know how to tour of IR photography.
Photography At It’s Best
IR is there in the world and our environment. But, we cannot see it. It is not visible. IR filters were invented to see that part of the world that was beyond the vision limit. Infrared photography gives another dimension to the otherwise boring photography. The best part is that it cannot be photoshopped or played with various apps available. The darker the filter, the more precise the infrared would be. The lenses/filter can be chosen individually keeping in mind the preference of a person. A normal DSLR can be converted into an IR camera. The conversion has to be chosen carefully. Many companies offer conversions. The aperture and the rules to click a picture remains the same. However, the finish of the picture changes manifold. Post-processing a picture is also different in an IR scenario. It may require tricky hacks to process a good picture.
White Balance And Colour
White balancing is a process that can be done while clicking a picture or post-processing. It depends upon a person what option has he chosen. While converting, a person can choose how he wants to tackle his photography. For color photography, it is recommended you take a tripod. It is important to bracket your images and treat them accordingly. IR defines the tone, color, contrast, and texture. There are a few subjects that come out outstanding when photographed with an IR camera. Water absorbs IR. The ripples and the effects come out well in an IR photo. People when used as subjects, can give beautiful effects. Their different skin tones and veins are visible when photographed by an IR camera. Their faces glow under the IR filter. The face has a smoother white finish.
When wearing sunglasses, the infrared pass through them and one can see eyelids underneath. It is a great idea to experiment with people wearing different costumes. It makes them stand out with vibrant colors and hues. Just like people, it is a good idea to put the same technique on animals. Their skin colors and hues make photography to another level. Skies with clouds can also be very tricky when it comes to IR photography. If the filter and the treatment are not perfect, there may be stark contrast and the blue sky may look stark black. While clicking, make sure you blow out the clouds, else the picture taken will give an unpleasant look to the otherwise beautiful combo. The flora is also an interesting subject. The different greens reflect IR differently. As a result, you can have a beautifully hued picture.
